Die Goodenough-Insel oder Nidula ist eine Insel in der Milne-Bay-Provinz in Papua-Neuguinea. Sie liegt östlich von Neuguinea in der Salomonensee und gehört zu den D’Entrecasteaux-Inseln. Die Insel wurde 1873 von Kapitän John Moresby besucht, der sie nach Kommodore James Graham Goodenough benannte. Im Jahr 2000 lebten dort etwa 20.000 Menschen.

Die nächstgelegene Insel, abgesehen von kleineren Nebeninseln, ist die größere Fergusson-Insel im Osten, von der die Goodenough-Insel durch die bis zu 3,9 km schmale Moresby Strait getrennt ist.

Die Insel ist nahezu kreisförmig, 39 Kilometer lang und 26 Kilometer breit. Ihre Fläche beträgt 687 km², die Länge der Küstenlinie 116 Kilometer. Von einem Küstenstreifen, der in der Breite zwischen zwei und zehn Kilometer schwankt, erhebt sich die Insel steil zum 2536 m hohen Vulkankegel des Mount Vineuo. Sie zählt, gemessen an der Fläche, zu den am steilsten abfallenden Inseln der Welt.

Goodenough Island ist auch für Felsmalereien sowie die Goodenough Island Cargo Cults bekannt. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg führte die australische Armee dort Ende Oktober 1942 die Operation Drake durch, um gestrandete Japaner von der Insel zu verjagen. Ab Dezember 1943 war Goodenough eine wichtige strategische Basis für die Operation Dexterity.

Artenschutz

Im Zentrum der Insel befindet sich die Oi Mada Wara Wildlife Management Area. Sie hat eine Gesamtfläche von 22.840 ha. Sie bietet einen kritischen Lebensraum für mehrere gefährdete Tierarten, wie dem Goodenough-Buschkänguru (Dorcopsis atrata) und dem Flinkwallaby (Macropus agilis). Sie ist auch Verbreitungsgebiet der Nacktaugen-Fruchttaube und der Albertistaube.
