Lord George Francis Hamilton, GCSI, PC (* 17. Dezember 1845 in Ealing (London); † 22. September 1927 in London) war ein britischer Politiker (Conservative Party).

Familie

Hamilton entstammte einem schottischen uradeligem Geschlecht, das seit dem 13. Jahrhundert eine bedeutende Rolle in der schottischen Geschichte spielte<ref>Genealogisches Handbuch des Adel, Band Fü II, Seite 166</ref>. Er war ein nachgeborener Sohn von James Hamilton, 1. Duke of Abercorn und Lady Louisa Jane Russell (1812–1905). Die Anrede Lord war deshalb ein reiner Höflichkeitstitel, formal wurde Hamilton erst am 1. Januar 1903 in den Adelsstand erhoben, als er zum Knight Grand Commander des Order of the Star of India geschlagen wurde.<ref>Knights and Dames: HAR–HOR bei Leigh Rayment’s Peerage</ref> Statt des damit verbundenen Titels „Sir“ führte er aber weiterhin den ranghöheren Höflichkeitstitel „Lord“.

1871 heiratete Hamilton Lady Maud Caroline Lascelles (1846–1938), eine Tochter von Henry Lascelles, 3. Earl of Harewood und der Lady Louisa Thynne. Aus der Ehe gingen drei Söhne hervor: Ronald James Hamilton (1872–1958), der in den diplomatischen Dienst ging, Anthony George Hamilton (1874–1936) und Robert Cecil Hamilton (1882–1947). Die letzteren schlugen Karrieren in der Army bzw. in der Navy ein.

Politisches Wirken

Hamilton studierte an der University of Glasgow und arbeitete nach dem Abschluss seiner Studien als Friedensrichter in Middlesex und Westminster.

1868 wurde Hamilton als konservativer Abgeordneter für den Wahlkreis Middlesex ins House of Commons, das britische Unterhaus, gewählt. Den Sitz für Middlesex hatte er ununterbrochen bis 1885 inne, danach, von 1885 bis 1906, gehörte er dem Parlament als Abgeordneter für den Wahlkreis Ealing an.

Von 1874 bis 1878 amtierte Hamilton als Staatssekretär im Indienministerium, danach von 1878 bis 1880 als stellvertretender Vorsitzender des Ausschusses für Erziehungsfragen (Vice-President of the Committee on Education). Den Höhepunkt seiner Karriere bildete schließlich seine Tätigkeit als Erster Lord der Admiralität in den ersten beiden Regierungen Salisbury (1885–1886 und 1886–1892). In dieser Eigenschaft führte er unter anderem 1889 den Two-Power-Standard ein, der als Grundsatz der britischen Flottenrüstung bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg Gültigkeit besitzen sollte. 1894, während seine Partei in der Opposition war, übernahm Hamilton die Aufgabe des Vorsitzenden des Ausschusses für die Schulen von London. Von 1895 bis 1903 amtierte Hamilton schließlich als Indienminister in der 3. Regierung Salisbury und der Regierung Balfour. Zudem gehörte Hamilton seit 1878 dem Privy Council, dem britischen Kronrat an. Hamilton war Dr. jur. und Dr. phil. letzteres h. c. und Captain of Deal Castle<ref>Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels, Band Fü II, Seite 169</ref>.
