Giuseppe Scarlatti, {{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|full|CODE=de|SCRIPTING=Latn|SERVICE=deutsch}} (* 1718 oder 18. Juni 1723 in Neapel; † 17. August 1777 in Wien) war ein italienisch-österreichischer Komponist.

Leben

Giuseppe, nach eigenen Angaben ein Enkel von Alessandro Scarlatti und Neffe von Domenico Scarlatti (doch ist dies nicht gesichert)<ref>Nach anderen Angaben war Giuseppe Scarlatti ein Sohn von Francesco Scarlatti (1666 – nach 1741), einem Bruder Alessandro Scarlattis, vgl. Franz Brendel, Geschichte der Musik in Italien, Deutschland und Frankreich, Leipzig 1852 u. ö., S. 109.</ref>, schrieb zunächst Opern für die Bühnen in Rom, Neapel und Venedig. 1757 ließ er sich in Wien als Komponist und Klavierlehrer dauerhaft nieder.

Heute weitgehend vergessen, war Giuseppe (Josef) Scarlatti zwar nicht musikalisch innovativ, aber doch ein tüchtiger Komponist im Stil seiner Zeit. Besonders in seinen komischen Opern beeindruckte er durch frische, gefällige Melodien. Die Libretti seiner über 30 Opern stammten meist von Pietro Metastasio (opera seria) oder Carlo Goldoni (opera buffa). Zu seinem Werk zählen auch drei Kantaten sowie Cembalosonaten.

Da Domenico Scarlatti auch den Vornamen Giuseppe führte, kam es in späterer Zeit gelegentlich zu Verwechslungen. Arien aus Giuseppes Opern Merope (Rom 1740) und Arminio in Germania (Florenz 1741) wurden z. T. fälschlich Domenico zugeschrieben. Ebenso führte Giuseppes Aufenthalt in Neapel 1754/55 zu irrtümlichen Berichten über eine Rückkehr Domenico Scarlattis dorthin<ref>Ralph Kirkpatrick (Hg.): Domenico Scarlatti, Complete keyboard works, New York 1972, Bd. 2 S. 9.</ref>.
