Heptachord Lyra

Der Heptachord (gr., lat.: heptachordus – siebensaitig) ist ein musikwissenschaftlicher Begriff der Griechen, der auch im Mittelalter noch genutzt wurde.<ref name="Westphal1863">August Rossbach, Rudolf Westphal: Metrik der griechischen Dramatiker und Lyriker nebst den begleitenden musischen Künsten. Theil 2, Abtheilung 1: Rudolf Westphal: Harmonik und Melopöie der Griechen. Teubner, Leipzig 1863, S. 87.</ref> Ein Heptachord bezeichnet dabei entweder die große Septime oder eine diatonische Folge von sieben Tönen, beschrieben als Kombination zweier Tetrachorde. Oft wird die Folge e f g a b c d angegeben als Heptachord.

Das Heptachord war gleichzeitig auch eine Form der Lyra (Zupfinstrument), mit eben sieben Saiten in einer diatonischen Stimmung vom Grundton bis zur Septime hatte.<ref name="Smith1853">William Smith (Hrsg.): Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities. 2nd Edition, improved and enlarged. Walton and Maberly u. a., London 1853, S. 721.</ref> Wie das Instrument oder die siebenstufige Leiter praktisch geklungen haben, ist unbekannt.
