Iapetos

Iapetos (Vorlage:GrcS) ist einer der Titanen der griechischen Mythologie und Sohn der Gaia und des Uranos.

Verwandtschaft

Als Gattin wird ihm meist die Okeanide Asia zur Seite gestellt, aber auch Klymene, ebenfalls eine Okeanos- (oder Uranos-)Tochter, Asope (Asopis) oder die Themis werden gelegentlich genannt. Mit ihr zeugte er Atlas, den Träger des Himmelsgewölbes, den überheblichen Menoitios, mit Klymene die Zwillinge Prometheus und Epimetheus (Prometheus-Mythos), durch welche das Titanengeschlecht des Iapetos auch mit dem Menschengeschlecht verbunden ist. Daneben werden noch zwei weitere Söhne genannt: Inachos und Hesperos.

Mythos

Als seine Mutter Gaia ihnen den Auftrag gab, Uranos zu entmannen, hielt er mit seinen Brüdern Hyperion, Krios und Koios ihren Vater fest. Kronos entmannte ihn dann mit einer Sichel.<ref>Bibliotheke des Apollodor 1.1.4</ref> Interpretationsansätze nehmen an, dass Iapetus den Vater im Westen festhielt. Somit wurde er auch als Titan des Westens bezeichnet. Seit der Titanomachie, dem Kampf des Göttergeschlechts der Titanen gegen die olympischen Götter, sitzen Iapetos und sein Bruder Kronos, verbannt von Zeus, in den lichtlosen Tiefen des Tartaros.<ref>Homer: Ilias 8,478–481</ref> Wie üblich bei den Genealogien griechischer Götter, taucht Iapetos bei einigen Dichtern und Erzählern (z. B. Aischylos, Pausanias) auch mit einer ganz anderen Abstammungslinie auf. Sonstiges

Nach Iapetos wurde der Mond Iapetus des Saturn benannt. In der Erdgeschichte ist Iapetus der Name eines vom ausgehenden Neoproterozoikum bis ins Paläozoikum existierenden Ozeans.

In der Buchreihe Percy Jackson von Rick Riordan fällt Iapetos bei einem Kampf mit dem Protagonisten Percy Jackson in die Lethe, den Fluss des Vergessens, und verliert all seine Erinnerungen. Dieses Ereignis wird allerdings erst in der Nachfolgeserie Helden des Olymp beschrieben. Hier wird auch beschrieben, dass Percy ihm den Namen Bob gibt und ihn Persephone anvertraut, die ihn als Hausmeister einstellt.
