John Playfair (* 10. März 1748 in Benvie (bei Dundee), Schottland; † 20. Juli 1819 in Burntisland, Fife, Schottland) war ein schottischer Mathematiker und Geologe und Professor für Mathematik an der Universität Edinburgh. Einer seiner Brüder war William Playfair.

Leben und Wirken

Playfair war der älteste Sohn von James Playfair (1712–1772) und dessen Frau Margaret Young (1719/20–1805). Bis 1762 wurde er zu Hause unterrichtet. Anschließend besuchte Playfair die University of St Andrews, wo er 1765 als Master of Arts (M.A.) graduierte.

Vorlage:Hinweisbaustein 1795 veröffentlichte er unter dem Titel Elements of geometry eine kommentierte Ausgabe der Werke von Euklids Elementen, in der er eine alternative Formulierung des Parallelenaxioms gab. Er war auch einer der ersten Mathematiker, der Analysis in Großbritannien unterrichtete.

In den Geowissenschaften ist Playfair vor allem durch seine Unterstützung von James Hutton bekannt. Playfair begleitete Hutton bei vielen Exkursionen, zum Beispiel an die Nordseeküste, wo sie an einem Felsen die diskordante Schichtung zweier Gesteine bemerkten – ein Hinweis auf langandauernde Verbiegungen der Erdkruste.

Huttons Theory of the earth ergänzte er 1802 in Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth mit einer Zusammenfassung und eigenen Abbildungen, um den schwierigen Stil leichter lesbar zu machen.

Ehrungen

Am 5. Februar 1807 wurde Playfair als Mitglied („Fellow“) in die Royal Society gewählt.<ref>{{#switch: {{#invoke:Str|left|NA8269|2}}
