Kornat (Italienisch Incoronata) ist eine längliche kroatische Insel in der Adria. Sie gehört zur Gruppe der Kornaten.
Lage, Ausdehnung
Mit 32,44 km²<ref name="Duplancic-Cala-Ujevic">Duplančić Leder, T.; Ujević, T.; Čala, M. (2004): Duljine obalne crte i površine otoka na hrvatskom dijelu Jadranskog mora određene s topografskih karata mjerila 1:25 000, Geoadria, Vol. 9, No. 1, 5-32.</ref> ist sie die größte Insel vor Šibenik. Sie schließt sich südlich von Dugi Otok an und ist umgeben von vielen unbewohnten kleinen Inseln. Von Südwesten nach Nordosten erstreckt sie sich über 35 km, wobei sie sehr gebirgig ist. Der höchste Berg ist der Veli Vrh mit 236 m im Nordwesten der Insel.
Die Vegetation auf der zerklüfteten Insel ist dünn. Mit 50 Häusern stellt Vruje die größte Siedlung dar.
Geschichte
Bereits während des Neolithikums lebten Menschen auf Kornat. Darauf weisen Funde von steinernen Äxten auf dem Feld Zejkovac unterhalb des Berges Pedinka auf der Insel hin. Die ersten sicher bestätigten Kolonisationen der Inseln datieren aus der Zeit der Illyrer. Auch die Römer hinterließen Spuren. Die Insel war danach bis ins 13. Jahrhundert nur sehr dünn besiedelt.
Bei den Volkszählungen von 1857 und 1869 scheint die Insel noch unbewohnt gewesen zu sein, während man 1880 immerhin 23 Bewohner zählte. Während auf den Kornati-Inseln 1931 noch 313 Bewohner gezählt wurden, entvölkerte sich die Insel nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg vollständig (1953). 2011 zählte man wieder 21 Einwohner.
