Lefktro ({{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|full |CODE=el |SCRIPTING=Grek |SERVICE={{#if: {{#invoke:TemplUtl|faculty| 0 }} | neu}}griechisch |SUITABLE=prefix neu}} (n. sg.)) ist seit 2011 ein Gemeindebezirk der Gemeinde Dytiki Mani in der griechischen Region Peloponnes. Er ging aus der gleichnamigen, seit 1997 bestehenden Gemeinde hervor. Das Gebiet des Gemeindebezirks liegt in der so genannten Äußeren Mani, dem mittleren Finger der Halbinsel Peloponnes. Verwaltungssitz war der Ort Kardamyli.

Kardamyli

Kardamyli (auch Kardamili, {{#invoke:Vorlage:lang|flat}}), direkt am Messinischen Golf auf der griechischen Halbinsel Mani gelegen, war bis 2010 der Verwaltungssitz der Gemeinde Lefktro, wirkt mit seinen etwa 500 Einwohnern aber eher wie ein Dorf. Doch ist der Ort ein Versorgungszentrum für die umliegenden Dörfer. Etliche Hotels, Pensionen und gastronomische Betriebe bieten dem Urlauber ihre Leistungen an. Kardamyli war von 1960 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 2011 der Wohnort des ehemaligen britischen Offiziers und Schriftstellers Patrick Leigh Fermor. 1989 wurde in den Hügeln über dem Ort die Asche des Schriftstellers Bruce Chatwin beigesetzt.

Geschichte

Kardamyli wird schon in der Ilias von Homer lobend erwähnt. Es wurde von Agamemnon dem Achill als Mitgift versprochen, wenn dieser seine Tochter heiraten würde:

In der römischen Zeit war Kardamyli der Hafen für Sparta und in der byzantinischen Zeit für Mystras. Während der türkischen Herrschaft über Griechenland konnte Kardamyli dank der abgelegenen Lage eine gewisse Unabhängigkeit bewahren. Viele Byzantiner suchten hier Zuflucht.

Vor und während der griechischen Befreiungskriege um 1821 war Kardamyli Zufluchtsort und Treffpunkt für die Befreiungskrieger. Von hier brachen am 22. August 1821 Theodoros Kolokotronis und seine Männer auf, um Kalamata zu befreien.

Altkardamyli besteht aus vier separaten befestigten Anwesen, die ein geschlossenes Ensemble bilden. Die Anwesen hatten einen separaten Wehrturm, Turmhaus, Kirche oder Kapelle, Brunnenhaus sowie Wirtschaftsgebäude. Die Anwesen wurden Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts verlassen und verfielen. Inzwischen wurde Alt-Kardamyli restauriert und zum Teil wieder bewohnbar gemacht. In einem Turmhaus der Mourtzinoi ist ein Museum eingerichtet, das die Geschichte der Mani und des Anwesens darstellt.
