Der Rookie of the Year Award der Major League Baseball wird jährlich an den besten Spieler vergeben, der sein erstes komplettes Jahr in der Profiliga bestritten hat. Wie üblich wird die Auszeichnung doppelt verliehen. Es wird dementsprechend je ein Rookie of the Year der American League und einer der National League geehrt.
Nur zweimal in der Geschichte schaffte es ein Spieler neben dem Rookie of the Year Award auch gleich im ersten Jahr zum Most Valuable Player gewählt zu werden. Als erster Spieler schaffte dies Fred Lynn im Jahre 1975. Das Gleiche gelang dann im Jahre 2001 dem japanischen Baseballstar Ichirō Suzuki, der als Rookie galt, obwohl er zuvor in Japan schon professionell Baseball gespielt hatte. Der einzige Rookie, der es schaffte neben dem Rookie of the Year Award auch den Cy Young Award zu gewinnen, war Fernando Valenzuela im Jahre 1981.
Wer gilt als Rookie?
Um als Rookie zu gelten, und sich so für den Award zu qualifizieren, darf ein Spieler vor der aktuellen Saison folgende Werte noch nicht erreicht haben:
- 130 at bats oder 50 Innings als Pitcher in der MLB
- 45 Tage im Roster eines Teams der MLB
