}} Marie-Galante ist eine der Inseln über dem Winde der Kleinen Antillen in der Karibik. Sie gehört zum französischen Überseedépartement Guadeloupe. Die fast runde Kalkstein-Insel (Durchmesser etwa 15 km) hat eine Fläche von 158 km². Wegen ihrer Form nennt man sie auch „la grande galette“<ref>Jones, John G., Nicholas P. Dunning, Deborah M. Auf der Insel gibt es drei Gemeinden: Grand-Bourg, Capesterre und Saint-Louis.

Geschichte

Ungefähr 80 v. Chr. begann die keramische Periode, die bis ca. 1600 n. Chr. dauerte. Sie wird eingeteilt in:

Kolumbus lief die Insel auf seiner zweiten Reise am 3. November 1493<ref>http://www.cntraveller.com/guides/north-america/guadeloupe/marie-galante/what-to-do</ref> an und nannte sie nach seiner Karavelle Maria Galanda. Im Jahre 1648 wurden ca. 50 französische Indentur-Arbeiter angesiedelt. Nach fünf Jahren waren sie alle Krankheiten erlegen oder verhungert<ref>Jones, John G., Nicholas P. Dunning, Deborah M. Es wurden Sklavenplantagen für Tabak, Indigo und Zuckerrohr angelegt. 1685 wurde der berüchtigte Code Noir eingeführt<ref>Anny Dominique Curtius, Martinique and Guadeloupe. Jahrhundert wurden fast 100 Zuckerrohrpressen errichtet. Teilweise wurden Windmühlen zum Antrieb verwendet, was der Insel den Beinamen l’île aux cent moulins („Insel der 100 Mühlen“) einbrachte. 1676 plünderten die Holländer die Insel, 1690 und 1691 die Engländer. Vom 24. April 1679 bis Ende 1685 war Charles François d’Angennes, ein französischer Pirat und Sklavenhändler Gouverneur der Insel<ref>Michel-Christian Camus, Le marquis de Maintenon, corsaire, négrier, planteur et gouverneur de Marie-Galante. Er hielt sich jedoch kaum auf der Insel auf. 1685 dankte er zu Gunsten seines Schwagers, Charles Auger († 1705), dem Mann seiner Schwester Louise d'Angennes ab und ließ sich auf der Plantage La Montagne auf Martinique nieder<ref>Michel-Christian Camus, Le marquis de Maintenon, corsaire, négrier, planteur et gouverneur de Marie-Galante. Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts hatte die Insel rund 30.000 Bewohner. Wegen des Niedergangs der Zuckerproduktion emigrierten große Teile der Bevölkerung.

Wirtschaft

Zuckerrohr ist nach wie vor das Hauptprodukt der Insel, es wird auf kleinen individuellen Parzellen angebaut, kaum eine ebene Fläche auf der Insel ist nicht mit Zuckerrohr bepflanzt<ref>Ron Emoff, Truth, Talk and History in the Non-Nation: Gwo Ka's Place on Marie-Galante, French Antilles. Das Zuckerrohr wird zentral gepresst. Aus dem Saft wird vor Ort Rhum agricole (weiß und braun) gebrannt.

Flora und Fauna

Zu den endemischen Arten der Insel gehörte eine schwarzgefärbte (melanistische) Unterart des Kaninchenkauzes (Athene cunicularia guadeloupensis). Sie ist seit dem späten 19. oder frühen 20. Sehenswürdigkeiten

Heute sind etwa 70 Türme von Windmühlen noch zum Teil sichtbar. In einem erhaltenen Herrenhaus einer Zuckerrohrplantage von 1839, L'Habitation Murat bei Grandbourg, ist ein kleines Museum untergebracht<ref>Ron Emoff, Truth, Talk and History in the Non-Nation: Gwo Ka's Place on Marie-Galante, French Antilles. Ethnomusicology Forum 17/2, 2008, 212-213</ref>. Die Behausungen der 307 Sklaven sind nicht erhalten. Die prähistorischen Höhlenmalereien der Insel sind nicht zugänglich. Der Volkstanz der Insel nennt sich Kadril, er geht auf die Quadrillen der Kolonialzeit zurück.
