Die Inselgruppe bildet das Königreich Uvea. Sie setzt sich aus der Vulkaninsel ʻUvea und einem sie nahezu umschließenden Atoll zusammen. Geschichte
Ihren Namen erhielt die Inselgruppe von der Besatzung der britischen Forschungsschiffes Dolphin zu Ehren ihres Kapitäns Samuel Wallis. Er hatte die Hauptinsel am 16. August 1767 entdeckt, aber nie betreten.<ref>{{#invoke:Vorlage:Literatur|f}}</ref> 1887 schlossen etliche polynesische Eingeborenenkönige im Südseeraum, darunter auch der König von Uvéa, mit Frankreich einen Protektoratsvertrag.
Nach einer Volksabstimmung im Jahr 1961 wurden die Wallis-Inseln mit den 230 km südwestlich gelegenen Horn-Inseln als französisches Übersee-Territorium unter der bis heute gebräuchlichen Bezeichnung „Wallis-et-Futuna“ verbunden. Hauptort des Inselverbunds ist Mata Utu.
