Renault Espace
Der Renault Espace (Aussprache: "Ess-Pass, Französisch für "Raum, geräumig") ist eine fünftürige Großraumlimousine, die von März 1984 bis Oktober 2002 bei Matra gefertigt wurde und seit November 2002 bei Renault produziert wird. Von den bis zu sieben Einzelsitzen im Innenraum des Espace waren bis zur Generation IV bis zu fünf einzeln herausnehmbar. Mit der Modellgeneration V wandelte sich der Espace zum Crossover mit optionalen Sitzen in der dritten Sitzreihe, die im Kofferraum versenkt werden können. Nachdem Matra zuvor mit Simca zusammengearbeitet hatte (u. a. Bagheera, Murena, Rancho), entstanden bei Matra erste Prototypen eines Großraumwagens auf Basis des Peugeot 505, nachdem Peugeot Simca übernommen hatte.
Den Mut zu dieser völlig neuen Fahrzeuggattung hatte dann schlussendlich Renault, wo man auf der Suche wieder nach einem revolutionären Modell war, welches Anfang der 1980er im Programm fehlte.
Die Idee war genial: Mit den Außenabmessungen eines kompakten PKW einen nutzbaren Innenraum nahe an einem Kleinbus zu schaffen, mit der Ausstattung als komfortabler Reisewagen.
Als mechanische Basis der ersten Generation diente der Renault 18 (Zweiliter Vergaser und Turbo-Diesel), die Leuchten stammten vom Trafic-Transporter und in der Ausstattung finden sich einige Teile aus dem Renault 9.
Auch wenn außen nur Renault-Zeichen zu lesen sind, sind die ersten 3 Generationen des Espace offiziell Matra-Produkte in allen Aspekten der Zulassung.
Das Publikum war mit diesem unkonventionellen Angebot anfangs überfordert, und der Verkaufsstart verlief schleppend. Bald erkannten vor allem größere Familien die unschlagbaren Vorteile. Außer dem etwa zeitgleich vorgestellten Chrysler Voyager wurden bis Mitte der 1990er keine vergleichbaren Modelle angeboten, aber im Stillen entwickelt, denn danach hatten fast alle Hersteller ähnliche Modelle im Angebot.
Da sich für diese Fahrzeuge ein Familienwagen-Image einstellte, entwickelte sich der Publikumsgeschmack hin zu den SUVs, die aber trotz vielfach größerer Außenabmessungen in der Nutzbarkeit des Innenraums nicht mehr das Niveau der ursprünglichen Kompaktvans erreichten.
